"Living ape species are specialized species, relicts of a much larger group of now extinct apes. When we consider all evidence—that is, both living and fossil apes and hominins—it is clear that a human evolutionary story based on the few ape species currently alive is missing much of the bigger picture," said study co-author Ashley Hammond, an assistant curator in the Museum's Division of Anthropology. 

relic:  a thing which has survived from an earlier period or in a primitive form.     • an animal or plant that has survived while others of its group have become extinct, e.g. the coelacanth.     • a species or community that formerly had a wider distribution but now survives in only a few localities such as refugia. 

Kelsey Pugh, a Museum postdoctoral fellow and study co-author adds, "The unique and sometimes unexpected features and combinations of features observed among fossil apes, which often differ from those of living apes, are necessary to untangle which features hominins inherited from our ape ancestors and which are unique to our lineage.”

hominin: a primate of a taxonomic tribe (Hominini), which comprises those species regarded as human, directly ancestral to humans, or very closely related to humans: fossil footprints reveal the height of ancient hominins. Some consider the tribe Hominini to include only the genera Homo and Australopithecus and their extinct relatives, thus making hominin equivalent to hominid (see hominid). Others define the tribe so as to include the chimpanzees, and sometimes also the gorillas.
